PARK GUELL

Everyone knows about the Park Guell, symbole of Barcelona and one of the most famous Gaudí’s works. But what about its history? Let us tell it to you.

The Park Guell was ordered by Eusebi Guell in 1895. Originally, it was thought by Gaudí to be a garden-city with around 60 houses and a church. He started to design the park according to his style, combining modernist architecture and natural elements.

Unfortunately, the financial supports he received were cut and the project was abandoned. Just two out of the 60 houses were built. In 1923, Barcelona city council turned it into a public park.

Today the Park Guell is UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From October 2013 there is an entrance fee to visit the monumental zone (main entrance and the parts containing mosaics) in order to help the place’s preservation and regulate the number of people in the park area. Nevertheless, there is a reduced rate for those wishing to see both Gaudí’s house and the Sagrada Família Church.

What you can’t miss

On the main entrance, on Calle Olot, you have two pavilions with curved roofs covered with coloured tiles. From there, you can climb the stairs with the iconic salamander, made of irregular pieces of ceramics, typical of the Gaudí’s style.

After the stairs you will enter the Sala Hipóstila. This area counts with 86 columns. Its high ceiling confers to the room great acoustics and for this reason it frequently hosts concerts.

The focal point of the park is the main terrace, surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent. Gaudí incorporated in the Park many motifs of Catalan nationalism, and elements from mysticism and ancient poetry.

Have you noticed the small holes on the benches? They were made in order to collect the rainwater to water the plants of the park. Brilliant, isn’t it?

Go to the White House, on the top of the hill, the view from there is amazing!

Get to the highest part of the hill and you will have Barcelona on your feet!
