Barcelona is a city where walking is pleasant and easy.
When the city spreads itself, public transport followed. Now the metro and bus networks will take you wherever you want.

Public transport

A very useful tool to use the city transports, is to visit the Official Barcelona’s Transport Page where just setting a departure and arrival point you will see all the possible option you have for your journey. Anyway let’s have a look at all the different options we have!

Metro

The Metro network in Barcelona has 11 lines that you can distinguish by colors or numbers.
Every station has an elevator to facilitate access for disabled people.

Timetable
  • Monday to Thursday and Sundays: 5am to midnight
  • Fridays: 5am – 2am
  • Saturdays and day before bank holidays: open 24h
  • January 1st, June 24th, August 17th, September 21st and September 24th: open 24h
  • December 24th: 5am – 11pm

Ticket price: 2,00€ (it would be cheaper for you to buy a T10 card (10 journeys on one card), the price per journey is then a lot cheaper).

Buses

Barcelona Buses will bring you everywhere in the city. Please note that you have to get on at the front and validate your ticket.

  • Timetable: 6am – 11:30pm
  • Ticket price: 2,00€ (it would be cheaper for you to buy a T10 card (10 journeys on one card), the price per journey is then a lot cheaper).

NitBus

The night buses cover most of the Barcelona. Timetable: 10pm – 5am. Each 20 minutes to 1 hour. Information: 010

Tram

There are 6 lines in Barcelona.

  • Trambaix, which includes T1,T2 and T3: covers the Avenida Diagonal from Plaça Francesc Macia to Sant Joan Despí;
  • Trambesos, which includes T4, T5 and T6: from Ciutadella to Glòries and then from the Avenida Diagonal to Fòrum and St. Adrìa del Besós.

FCC

El Ferrocarril de la Generalitat de Catalunya has similar lines to the metro but it will take you out of the city. The central station is located in Plaça Catalunya. Caution, if you want to go to Montserrat, you have to take the FGC at Plaça Espanya.

Rodalies

Rodablies/Cercanias are short distance trains linking Barcelona to the surroundings. The main stations are Plaça Catalunya, Passeig de Gracia and Sants Estacion.

Aerobus

This special bus brings you from the city center to the airport or from the airport to the city center, in 30 minutes. They have a 10 minute frequency to the Terminal 1 and 15 minutes to the terminal 2. 4 stops: Plaça Espanya, Urgell, Plaça Universitat et Plaça Catalunya.

Ticket price
  • Single ticket: 5,90€
  • Return ticket: 10,20€
  • Children under 4: free

If you buy the return ticket, please note that you have to use it in the first hour after the purchase and the return should be used in the next 9 days!

Transport prices

Barcelona and its provinces are divided into zones. The city and nearby places (Castelldefels, St. Feliu de Llogbregat, Montcadda i Reixac and Montgat) are in Zone-1.
The transport tickets work for metro, FGC train, buses and tram. They are available in every metro station and FGC stations, information points, kiosks and tobaccos. You can also buy single tickets in the bus (only cash).

  • Single ticket – 1 journey: 2€
  • T-10 : 10 journey card: 9,80€
  • T-Dia: 1 day: 7,25€
  • T-Mes: 1 month: 52,75€
  • T 50/30: 50 journeys in 30 days: 39,20€
  • HOLA: These cards are valid during 2,3,4 or 5 days with unlimited journeys.

Practical Tips

  • The T-10 is a multi-personal ticket and it allows to join 10 journeys. Just validate it as many times as there are people. The most economic way to travel in group!
  • Ticket’s journey are valid during 1h30, during which you can also change mean of transport (bus/metro/tram).
  • Be careful if you buy a single ticket! You’ll have to buy another one each time you change transports! (ie: from metro to bus).

Other means of transport

Taxis in Barcelona are easily recognizable. Just look for a black and yellow car! If the top light is green, it means it’s free, if it’s orange, it’s occupied. Just wave at them and they’ll stop.

  • T-1: Monday-Friday night; Saturday and Bank Holidays
  • T-2: 8am – 8pm
  • T-3: 24h/24 from Monday to Saturday and bank holidays
  • Minimum fare: T-1: 2,05€ ; T-2: 2,05€ ; T-3: 5,60€
  • 1 Km: T-1: 1,18€ ; T-2: 0,93€ ; T-3: 0,63€
  • From or to the airport: 3,10€ airport charge + lugguage (1 euro per suit case).

Please remermber that Barcelona has pedestrian areas where taxis cannot go, ex: Barrio Gotico or La Ribera. You’ll have to walk a little!

Bicing

The red bikes you see with drop-off and pick-up stations all around the city are called Bicing. This is a service for locals, as you need to be registred in Barcelona, have a NIE* number, to get your card. You can apply directly online on the official webiste.
The first 30 minutes are always free. Then, from 30 minutes up to 2 hours you’ll have to pay 0,73€ per half hour. If you exceed the 2 hours, you’ll pay a 4,43€ fee per hour.
NIE is a identification number in Spain.
