Designed by the British architect Richard Rogers in collaboration with Alonso Balaguer in 2000, the commercial centre of Las Arenas of Barcelona is situated Plaça Espanya. It haven’t always looked like this. In 1899, the architect August Font i Carreras began the construction of a bullfighting arena called “Las Arenas”. The Arenas were inaugurated one year after and welcomed 14,893 spectators during 77 years. Between 1977 and 1990 when it closed down, the Arenas hosted sports as well as cultural and political events.

6 floors of shopping and entertainments

The magnificent building went through a complete renovation and has turned into a beautiful and spectacular shopping centre. It has been referred to as Las Arenas since the end of the works in 2000 and it now hosts a huge shopping mall with various shops such as Mango, Benetton or Nespresso, as well as a 3D cinema, hairdressers, a Rock Museum, the Metropolitan Sport Center and a Mercadona supermarket.
If you go to the basement, you’ll also walk by good restaurants and many places where you can have quality tapas food.

An incredible view over Plaça Espanya

The most impressive aspect of the building, apart from its structure, is its immense 5,000m2 rooftop which offers a panoramic 360° view above Barcelona and a closer view of Montjuïc.

You should not miss it! To enjoy this aerial panorama from the top you have two options:

  • take the lift outside, which takes you up on the platform for 1 euro
  • take the escalators inside the building for free and observe the metal structure of the arenas.
