FESTA MAJOR DE GRÀCIA

The Festa Major de Gràcia is one of the greatest summer festivals in Barcelona. It is organised by the neighbors and families of the district who worked all year long to change the district into a fantastic place. It is an important and old celebration in Barcelona. This year, the Festa Major de Gracia takes place from August 14th to 21st and will stand its 197º edition!

During this week of festivities, Gràcia changes faces and become a picturesque district filled with colors, activities for family and children and free concerts.

People in Gràcia take the decoration of their district really seriously. Streets are closed before the starting date so that they can install everything. Apart from this, it is not just a week of fun and music. This festival hides a real contest organized between the 17 streets of Gracia, which only with recycled materials, had to compete for the award as best street decoration.

The theme is different every year and is not revealed until the fiesta begins.

If you have the opportunity to be in Barcelona during the first two days of the event then just go! Winners are elected on the second day and celebrations in their honor are organized.

Castelleres, the famous Catalan human tower, fire-breathing dragons and devils (“correfoc” in catalan), gegants (“giants”) and the cagrossos (“big head”) will all be there to entertain you, like during La Mercè festival.

Practical information

During the Festa Major de Gràcia (from the 14th to the 21st of August) the metro is open all night in Barcelona!

The first day of the event, August 15th, is a bank holiday is Spain, the Assumption Day.

How to get there?
  • Bus: 22, 24 and 28 to Gran de Gràcia-Jesús
  • Metro: L3 to Fontana
  • Vesping: Take moped for rent and select the spot in the GPS.
  • Walk up the streets to Gràcia, it’s nice too!
Tips

If you don’t have too much time but you still want to enjoy the Fiesta Major de Gràcia, go directly to Carrer de Joan Blanques and Carrer de Verdi, these streets are the most popular ones and they usually win the big prize.

In order to avoid the crowd in the bus, you can take the L3 to Fontana or Lesseps, L4 to Joanic or L5 to Diagonal.
