You may have heard about the “Parc l’Escorxador” and never really found it. Well, this is the other name for the Joan Miro park. The park stands on the old slaughterhouse’s place, “Escorxador” in Catalan. When the house closed down in 1979, the Barcelona City Council was working on the city renovation project and wanted to satisfy the population’s needs after the Franco era. The Joan Miro Park was built to provide public area of quality. It was designed by Ildefons Cerdà, the Eixample municipal architect, helped by other Catalan architects.
A urban green lung
The Parc de Joan Miro is a quiet place where you can enjoy a walk while observing animals and enjoying the smell of the flora. It hides an important biodiversity. Walk on Carrer Vilamarí and you will be at the core of palm tree and pine forests.
Going back to the square, stop for a moment and admire the famous artist’s statue Dona i Ocell (“Woman and Bird”), all made of broken ceramics. The small lake around the statue gives you an opportunity to take great pictures of the sculpture and its reflection.
Walk to the central place, to a place which provides fun family activities like a pétanque court or a children’s playing area!
For reading lovers, don’t miss the Joan Miro park’s library, in Carrer Vilamarí and Diputació! The lovely building is perfect for a relaxing moment with its large windows giving into an artificial water channel.
The Joan Miro Park is perfect to have a break in a green area, before heading to Plaça Espanya for example.

If you go by car, don’t look for a car park in Barcelona, there is an underground one there!
